WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Taught by local woodcarver Robert Shaw. Inspired from a young age, Robert trained in carving and gilding at the City & Guilds of London Art School. After working in a North London carving studio he returned to teach at the City & Guilds of London Art School before establishing his own carving studio in Dorset.
The introductory woodcarving course is ideal for beginners and those interested in learning traditional carving techniques. Proving a solid foundation in the skills needed to pursue woodcarving as a creative practice or as a route into restoration or sculpture.
Students will learn the fundamentals of woodcarving while creating an ornamental limewood leaf to take home. The course blends hands-on carving with demonstrations and informal talks on tools, sharpening, and wood selection. All participants begin by carving an expressive oak leaf, with faster-working students given the opportunity to carve a more formal ranunculus design. Throughout the course, students are guided step by step with clear demonstrations and individual support.
