WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
This course is led by internationally renowned sailor, author and navigation expert Tom Cunliffe, one of the most respected voices in traditional seamanship and offshore navigation. Drawing on decades of ocean-going experience and teaching, Tom shows how the time-honoured skills of position fixing, course shaping and understanding tidal effects can be applied confidently and effectively without relying on electronic navigation systems.
Using real-world charts and practical passage-planning exercises based on locations around the British Isles and across the English Channel, students develop a thorough understanding of traditional navigation techniques and how they apply in genuine cruising and offshore scenarios.
By the end of the course, participants will have the confidence to venture onto the open sea knowing where they are, how to determine their position, and how to navigate safely to their destination using methods and instruments that have stood the test of time. Just as importantly, they will gain the knowledge and reassurance that, should modern electronics fail, they possess the skills needed to navigate safely and bring their vessel to a secure harbour.
